"I make work for the unspeakable stories.
Hi, this is Xiaoyan.
Art practices and research:  Xiaoyan Liu employs drawing, animation, and video as means to develop the symbol of eyes as a key element in her practice. She explores the present role of monitoring infrastructure embedded in our daily lives, such as mobile devices, social media networks, and smart cameras. Based on her research and observation of surveillance practices, Xiaoyan places her art in different narratives and references artists and animators like Frans Masereel, William Kentridge and Rachel Maclean through a systematic study of storyboards, techniques, and styles. In Xiaoyan’s work, she complicates the figurative elements of eyeballs, building plots to inform people that they are headed towards a world where all aspects of their life are rendered under surveillance.
Also interested in art education and how it plays a vital role to generate new knowledge in the future. My experience with children has influenced my art-based research knowledge in the field of education, and I would like to explore new forms of art education that are infused with digital tools in the future.
Collaborations: I collaborated with musicians and writers whose stories could build insights and speak for various communities.
